"There are more people than I can imagine who even after the lessons of Winogrand and Friedlander, they don't get it. They respect their work because they are told by respectable institutions that they are important artists, but what they really want to see is a picture with a figure or an object in the middle of it. They want something obvious. The blindness is apparent when someone lets slip the word 'snapshot'. Ignorance can always be covered by 'snapshot'. The word has never had any meaning. I am at war with the obvious."

I am a photography student… can some 1 explain these documentary photos to me! peace! xx
These are great and moving photographs – even at this format which is too small. Together (I am talking about the book) they constitute a monument to the workers in general, so I would not call it a documentary. Anybody who doesn’t get it, look at them longer and better. It’s all there, right in your face, like in life itself, but seen and shown by a great photographer.
